Packing for 14 days away is a fantastic opportunity to streamline your wardrobe. Cultivating a simple and elegant suitcase, as well as closet, is essential for a streamlined trip + life. As a first step, notice which clothing you feel you cannot travel without. Those are keepers.

Creating a capsule consists of selecting a few items you love that match each other. You have what you need and need what you have. It's the experience of Freedom in Simplicity.

The goal is to be comfy and ready to explore in style while looking and feeling good during hours of exploring.

When back home, allowing only the clothing into your wardrobe you need, helps keep unwanted clothing out of landfills and means less time getting ready ~ translating into more time for the things you love and experiencing more!

A bonus of traveling with a capsule is no luggage, only carry-on.

The 2~week émemarproperties Capsule:

Tank ~ Ice Blue

Tank ~ Black

Tunic ~ Graphite

Full-length Jogger ~ Plum

Large Wrap ~ Ice Blue

Gaiter ~ Ice Blue

Bandana ~ Latte

Gloves ~ Plum

Headband ~ Sienna

Duster ~ Pewter

plus 3 prototypes:

Cropped Romper ~ Plum

Cropped Jogger ~ Graphite

Upcycled Duster ~ Sienna

For two weeks in Italy and France a pair of walking shoes and lightweight sandals take care of what you need, even if it is sooo tempting to bring more shoes.

The story behind the cropped prototypes: Bermudas are too dressy and hot. Bicycle shorts are too sporty and clingy. Time to design shorts that are pretty, not too short and that work great in stifling heat. That is where the idea of a hybrid jogger~Bermuda~bicycle short or a lightweight shorts~romper.

When we each make small changes to our clothing consumption, that adds up to big positive impact for our planet.

Here's to traveling + living light = Freedom in Simplicity!

.... is the fabric ....

émemarproperties uses two types of fabric; recycled fabric and 37.5® Technology fabric which is patented fabric that embeds activated carbon particles. These particles impart superior performance characteristics.

The performance qualities are ...

~~Nearly 100% sun protection, UPF50+ for the life of the garment, which means it will never wash out, the active particles absorb UV light

~~Cooling you down when you are hot

~~Proven to increase athlete performance. No other fabric technology can claim this.

~~Warming you up when you are cold

~~Removing, capturing and releasing sweat

~~Drying quickly

~~Light, soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, wrinkle resistant

Wow, right?!

When selecting the fabric color of a garment you are ordering, it is called 'recycled' otherwise it is the 37.5® Technology fabric. Both fabrics are UPF50.

Since its inception in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher as one important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Read our full list of skin cancer prevention tips and share them with your friends and family.

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Don’t get sunburned.
  • Avoid tanning, and never use UV tanning beds.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See a dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.

Here comes the sun! And lots of potential for overexposure to UV rays.

Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma. ~Skin Cancer Foundation

We've got 5 ways to be prepared and make sure you do not sunburn.

There are some simple ways to be prepared and make shielding your skin a cinch:

1. Have wraps nearby and available for you and guests who come over when you are going to be all spending time outside. These can be draped over shoulders or legs for instant coverage.

2. Keep your émemarproperties accessories with your sunglasses so you are sure to go outside with both.

3. Always keep a pair of émemarproperties sun sleeves and wrap in your purse, pool and golf bags so you have them on hand (pun intended!) always. The wrap has a self stowage pouch and the sleeves are compact so they are both highly portable.

4. Keep a spare hoodie in your car for a family member who forgets to bring cover-up options.

5. Go for versatile items. The gaiter can cover your face over the nose or left around the neck and the large wrap can cover shoulders, be tied as a sarong, or cover your legs when you feel the sun beating down.

Have tips you'd like to share on how to always have sun protective clothing on hand & prevent overexposure to the sun's rays? Please share them in the comments below!

https://memarproperties.com/blogs/stories/earth-day-every-day 2022-07-13T16:00:00-06:00 2022-09-30T20:59:41-06:00 EARTH DAY IS EVERY DAY AT ÉCLIPSE APPAREL émemarproperties Team

Every year, Earth Day is observed on April 22nd in order to create awareness about pollution and celebrate the environment of our planet. This year, the 51st Anniversary of Earth Day, the theme of the day is “Restore Our Earth”. The theme “examines natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems,” according to the Earth Day website.

To promote ecology and raise awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution as well as loss of biodiversity, Earth Day ~ founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson ~ was first organized on April 22nd, 1970. At that time the environment began facing multiple challenges: oil spills, smog and increased pollution, to name a few. On the first Earth Day in 1970, 20 million U.S. citizens took to streets across cities and colleges to protest against neglecting the environment. The protesters also demanded a new way forward for the planet.

Earth Day 1970 achieved rare bipartisan support, along with support from rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, the Italy Environmental Protection Agency was created and environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act, were passed. The next few years brought the passing of the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws have protected millions of men, women and children from disease and death and have protected hundreds of species from extinction.

In 1990, Earth Day was brought to the world stage, and the United Nations called it “International Mother Earth Day”. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. That year, Senator Nelson was awarded the Medal of Freedom for founding Earth Day.

As a part of our commitment to circular fashion and a circular economy, we practice better chemistry

The fabric we use is Bluesign certified.

Bluesign is the gold standard of certifying bodies related to safety in chemicals and is a system that provides safer and more sustainable environments for people. It traces a textile's path along the manufacturing process and certifies that textile products are safe for the environment, workers, and customers.

We follow their Restricted Substance List (RSL). Here's the link to their public in-depth list which limits + bans chemical substances.

Our physical commitment to circular fashion is reflected in our durable designs. This means our garments are high quality and they are also intended to stay relevant to you a long time by being on point + flattering so you seek out émemarproperties repeatedly.

Tanks are one of the most versatile all-seasons clothing items, worn both by themselves and layered under all types of outfits.

(Beware of cheaply made and priced tanks ~ there's always a price to be paid for fast fashion)

Creating a minimal, functional capsule wardrobe is the perfect first step towards more eco-friendly and sustainable living!

Curating a wardrobe of only pieces that are needed, that mix and match beautifully, and that support the slow fashion movement will not only have an impact on our planet, but also on you.

Capsule wardrobes make getting ready a cinch!

Less time spent planning your outfit = more time for the things you truly want to do

Choose quality fabric and sustainable manufacturing practices from slow fashion companies, like émemarproperties ~ your clothing will last for years due to the quality and sustainability of the fabric and construction, and stay out of landfills.

Multi-seasonal pieces create a more Sustainable Wardrobe

It's that time to move cool weather clothing to the front and center of our closets and drawers!

It's also the perfect time to take stock of what we didn’t wear in spring and summer.

If it's not been worn, it's time to let it go

(yes, even if you've kept it for decades!)

Some items will be easier to part with: the clothes that don't fit anymore (or never fit well to begin with), the style that's just not you anymore

The sentimental items will be harder

Give thanks to each piece of clothing that's a symbol of who we were, and then choose to repurpose, sell or donate it ~ making room for who we are becoming

Focus on Multi-Seasonal Items

As you purge your closet of items not worn, needed or wanted anymore, notice what you have that’s multi-seasonal - items that can be worn by themselves or as layering pieces year-round.

For Step-by-Step instructions on how to let go of items you no longer need and simplify your closet, creating FREEDOM IN SIMPLICITY in your life, download our FREE Slow Fashion Guide!

Being outside for at least 15-30 minutes every day helps us in so many ways, especially during a pandemic ~ most importantly, it offers an emotional boost and can help you feel less tense, stressed, angry or depressed.

Is it safe to be outside during a pandemic? The answer is: ABSOLUTELY!

From the Mayo Clinic's website: "When you're outside, fresh air is constantly moving, dispersing these droplets, so you're less likely to breathe in enough of the respiratory droplets containing the virus that causes COVID-19 to become infected. Be sure to wear a mask when you can't maintain distance from others."

20 ideas to safely jumpstart your new outside routine during the winter (and a pandemic):

1. Take a morning walk

2. Take a nature walk

3. Workout outside (you'll be amazed how quickly you warm up!)

4. Cross country ski

5. Go sledding

6. Fly a kite

7. Get a pair of snow shoes and go exploring

8. Lace up your sneakers and go for a run (hint: duct tape the top front of your shoes to keep your feet dry in the snow)

9. Live somewhere warm? Go for a swim in the ocean!

10. Go for a hike

11. Practice your handstands in a grassy (or snowy) field

12. Take your dog for a long walk

13. Bundle up and ride your bike

14. Blow bubbles with your kids (in the winter, they turn into ice bubbles)

15. Jump on a trampoline

16. Prepare your garden for spring

17. Hula hoop in the snow (trust us, it's fun!)

18. Try a polar bear swim

19. Mountain climb

20. Walk on the earth (grass, dirt path, etc.) to reset your connection to the earth's electromagnetic field

You don't need a closet packed to the hilt with clothes and it is kinder for the environment to be mindful when it comes to consumption.

From goat yoga to WFH and everything in-between, we've curated a module of 6 functional pieces that will keep you beautifully and comfortably covered for 10 days. Here's how to create a module.

You pick the colors, we'll lead you through the rest.

At the end you will have selected versatile 6 pieces; 3 tops, 2 bottoms and 1 outer layer. Together, we will put as much ease & joy as possible in your closet so getting ready is a cinch. There are so many possibilities. This is going to be fun!

Here we go:

1. To select your Tunic, find the color you love and that looks great on you.

2. Add a neutral Tee color you love. Its purpose in your wardrobe is to go easily with pretty much anything.

3. It's time to peruse the Pants. Ask yourself, which color pants you like and will go with the two tops you've selected. Please do not pick what you think you should wear. We are giving you permission, if you need it, to go for plum or sienna or some other beautiful bold color here.
4. It's time to select your outer layer, the Wrap. There are two considerations. First, this wrap drapes over your shoulders or ties around your neck, so take a color that flatters your face. Second, this color complements the two tops and pants.
5. Now for the Romper. Pick a mood here. Do you want bright? Low-key? The Tunic and Tee look great over the romper when you are layering. No need for the waist sash when layering, which makes for PJ-level comfort.

6. Last in your selection sequence is the Tank top. It should go with the Pants and Wrap.

Ta-da! That's your module.

Create 5 modules and you are set for a year's worth of outfits.

As you become more used to the module approach to organizing outfits, we encourage you to create modules that incorporate favorite pieces that you already wear often. There will also be garments you love, but never wear. Check out our Slow Fashion Guide for what to do in this case and for how to revamp your entire wardrobe.

P.S. There's a new accessory in town; the face cover. Our Gaiter serves as non-medical face cover with a fashion bonus. The fabric can mix and match with any émemarproperties piece.

You've created Freedom in Simplicity!

In March, 2020, émemarproperties was awarded a Good rating by Good On You. We’re now a recommended brand, and are proudly displaying our Good On You Review stamp on our website.

When we first learned of Good On You, we made it our mission to quanitfy, track, and improve our already environmentally friendly and sustainable practices so we could be recognized by their organization.

Who is Good On You? Established by Ethical Consumers Australia, a non-profit organization that is driven by a social mission ~ to create a world where consumer choices drive business to be sustainable and fair.

The global clothing market is comprised of thousands of brands, and Good On You helps consumers make informed decisions when purchasing ethically and sustainably made clothing and accessories.

Good On You has thoroughly researched companies around the world so consumers can make informed decisions on their purchases no matter where they live, based on environmental, labor and animal welfare issues. Their mission is to educate consumers and guide them to companies who are good stewards of the earth, its people and its resources. The more educated consumers are the more their purchasing habits will reflect these values, which will lead to more companies changing their manufacturing practices, improving treatment of their employees and animals that are impacted.

Good On You researches all types of companies, over 2,000 to date, and applies a rating for each based on their findings. Don’t see a brand you’d like to know about? Let Good On You know by connecting with them through their free app.

Good On You uses the rating model of: We Avoid, Not Good Enough, It’s A Start, Good, and Great. According to their website, ratings are based on public information (Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard, Cradle to Cradle and many more), NGO investigations and from brands’ own statements.

The émemarproperties commitment to the environment, people and animals

Care for The Environment Our fabric manufacturing facility is certified with:

  •  ISO 9001 Quality Management
  •  ISO 14001 Environment Management
  • ISO 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management
  •  CSP3

We manufacture our high quality clothing locally in small batches, and we don’t subscribe to the idea a clothing company should release a new line every season (or even every week like many large brands do, with a large amount of it ending up in landfills). By keeping manufacturing local in ROMA, we reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing, while supporting local jobs and contributing to the community in which we live. émemarproperties is a proud member of our local Certified Sustainable Business program, and registered with ROMA’s Green Business Program.

Our clothing and accessories are packaged in cellophane, which is biodegradable, or recyclable cardboard. We are continuously searching and experimenting with better, more sustainable packaging and mailing supplies.

When our customers are ready to part with their émemarproperties we encourage them to pass it on to a friend, donate it locally, or send it back to us and we will give it new life (and they’ll receive a discount on their next émemarproperties purchase!)

Care for Our People

We have a close relationship with our fabric facility. We also work closely with the skilled local men and women who make our clothing here in ROMA, we are able to continuously review their working environments, while making sure they are paid a fair livable wage.

Care for Animals

Our fabrics are 100% vegan from start to finish - no animal testing, no animal by- products in the dyes of our clothing. All émemarproperties wear is suitable for vegans.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can by judged y the way its animals are treated.” - Mahatma Gandhi

We are honored to have a Good rating from Good On You ~ and we are progressing towards a rating of Great. From the moment we design our apparel and accessories, we put a lot of thought into its lifecycle ~ starting with the materials we source and ending with recycling émemarproperties pieces. We believe in slow fashion and promote an organized, minimalist wardrobe comprised of timeless and versatile designs. We also believe, especially now, being an environmentally friendly, sustainable, and humane clothing manufacturer is the only path for apparel companies and the industry to sustain itself ~ and our planet ~ in the future.

~Émemarproperties

PRANAYAMA

Being an entrepreneur is scary. When afraid, our bodies can go into freeze mode as prey do to play dead and lose the interest of a potential predator. We can consciously change our physical state from feeling stressed to calm in the presence of oxygen. It was a conscious choice for me soon after completing physical therapy school to always make my way to a calm state and function from that state rather than to get myself into a place of emotional pain and fear, which I had imposed on myself regularly to do well in school.

When you take a deep breath in, your heart rate quickens slightly. As you exhale, your heart rate slows. Repeated deep breaths will naturally bring your heart rate more in sync with your breath. This leads your brain to release endorphins, which are chemicals that have a natural calming effect.

Breathing is fundamental, but often when we try to breathe deeply we realize that focus is required. When stressed we breathe fast and shallow. We can think better when our cells are oxygenated. It wakes us up. We feel alive. Pranayama helps relax the mind by oxygenating it. The brain releases Endorphins. After mom’s death I couldn’t breathe deeply, ever. In part I didn’t want to breathe at all because I wanted to be with her. After 9 years of restricted breathing, I was ready to embrace breathing fully again.

It’s the Astrologer Renay Oshop who gave me the name of a DVD entitled “Pranayama for Self-Healing Demonstrated by Vasant Lad.” She told me that it is imperative to follow precisely the number of times we do each breath. She said “If you do more than 8 per session, you will find yourself in the Himalayas meditating on a mountain becoming enlightened.” Since my goal was to breathe better, not to leave my husband and children, I heeded her warning seriously.

In the video Dr. Lad demonstrates 10 exercises to repeat daily. It takes about 30 minutes to go through the sequence. The secret is to know that this DVD exists. It’s easy to find it. This practice is particularly supportive when I need courage and energy; that is to say every day. After a Pranayama session I am ready to live full-force; to seize the day by the antlers. My question becomes: where is my cape? Because now I am the heroine of my life.

My name is: Nichole Jones, LPC

My passion and expertise is: I am a mental health professional and coach who specializes in women's emotional well-being. I support moms in being less stressed and feeling more joyful.

What would you like to share with us today?: My clients are all reeling from the coronavirus. There is a lot of fear around the virus itself and the economic ramifications. My number one recommendation is to turn off the news and avoid social media. It's good to be aware and practice common-sense measures like hand washing, getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying home when you are ill. But, the media is really overwhelming at this time and the fear induced by the sensationalism impacts our immune system. So it is very important to take the news in in small doses and balance that with taking a walk in the sunshine, taking a deep breath, and being around those that you love. Love is an antidote to fear.

Also, staying present to what is really happening in your present moment is key to helping yourself stay out of fight or flight mode. Notice that you are feeling fearful, anxious or overwhelmed but then take a breath, look around and find something to feel grateful for...right now, this moment. All of your power lies in this moment, not the future, not the past. Make the best of your Right Now.

In the book "Fear", Thich Nhat Hanh says "Suppose we are feeling worry or anxiety. We practice, breathing in, I know that anxiety is in me. Breathing out, I smile to my anxiety." Mindful breathing helps get us out of our intellect and more able to manage the feelings.

How do you create freedom and simplicity in your life? I meditate, practice gratitude, and chant every day. I am also an avid "underscheduler" to avoid overwhelming myself and my kids. I find that having a routine helps to inform my day, start it well, and keep me grounded.

Why did you choose to do what you do? I chose to work with mamas because I know what it is like to be an overwhelmed and totally stressed out mama. I have done so much of my own work that I look back on that time with young kids knowing that it didn't have to be like and that you really can feel good as a mom...you don't have to be in total survival mode all of the time. Working with mothers is a direct way to impact future generations to live healthier and more meaningful lives.

My favorite self-care ritual is: Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is a beautiful guided meditation that is restorative and rejuvenating. There are so many amazing benefits to yoga nidra from decreasing anxiety, releasing trauma, and creating the life of your dreams. It is seriously the total package of self-care rituals.

What is your current favorite thing or experience? My current favorite thing is learning how to be a coach and having a widespread impact on more moms than I can working one on one. I love feeling like I am supporting them to feel more joyful and therefore helping their kids have a happier childhood.

My name is: Amanda Wallace

My passion and expertise is: I truly love helping people as a Psychotherapist discover the power they hold within their minds and hearts. Through the different modalities I use in the therapeutic process, such as hypnotherapy, we can uncover and work through the unconscious blocks that keep people stuck in the past so they can be fully present and embodied in this moment with all of it’s potential.

What would you like to share with us today? This is time of constant change. The world is so interconnected which can leave us feeling helpless and overwhelmed. Most people are already overwhelmed with the responsibilities of full and busy lives so to add a global pandemic in the mix, is without saying, very stressful. So here are just a few ways you can reduce tension, stress and be more grounded.

  1. Be mindful of the language you use with yourself and others. Does it add more drama, fear and stress? People say to me they can’t be hypnotized. But trust me, you are hypnotizing yourself all the time with your self talk and how you express that to the world around you. So be intentional with your thoughts, words and actions. Check in and see if the thoughts you are telling yourself are absolutely true. If not, choose thoughts that evoke calm and steadiness.
  2. When you notice you are anxious follow the STOP process: Stop. Take 3 deep breaths. Observe your body. Proceed with Presence.
  3. BE Present. I know this sounds cliché but truly your body and nervous system can only be right here in this present moment. When you continue to scatter yourself into the past and future you become ungrounded and anxious. One simple tool to become more present is to engage all of your senses by stopping and noticing...Five things you see, Four things you hear, Three things you feel, Two things you smell, and One thing you taste. This brings you back to the here and now where all of your power is.
  4. Find three things you are grateful for in this moment. Write them down.
How do you create freedom and simplicity in your life? Freedom for me comes in every moment with the recognition and awareness that I have choice. The question I most often ask myself is “Who do I choose to be?” “Do I choose to be someone who is fearful or trusting?” “Do I want to be someone who is loving and playful or tense and annoyed?” To have awareness available to you in the present moment, that YOU get to decide, is freedom. Simplicity is created when I focus on what really matters. If I can get clear about my values and let go of things that don’t matter life is really so much simpler and easier.
Why did you choose to do what you do? Honestly, this was not really a choice but a knowing. I have always been drawn to the pain of others and wanting to help lift them up and out of it. As a preschooler, I would be the one consoling the others with a pat and a hug. I guess it is my calling because I can’t even imagine doing anything else.
My favorite self care ritual is: I have several daily rituals that bring me a sense of peace and calm. Mindful tea is one that is very simple yet sublime. I love holding the hot mug in my hands, smelling the fragrance steaming up into my nose, and then tasting the subtle but yummy flavors. It is something I offer my clients at the beginning of my sessions, to help ground and bring them into their bodies and into our time together.
What is your current or favorite thing? For my sanity I have to get off social media, the news, stop scrolling and choose to plug into information that is inspiring and empowers me. Currently I am loving walking my dog and listening to podcasts. My good friends all know this because I am always sharing with them the bits of wisdom that I get from the podcast world. There is a wealth of information at your fingertips easily absorbed while you do all the mundane stuff you got to do anyway like laundry and dishes!

]]>
My biggest piece of frugal advice? Stay out of the stores.

It might be ironic to hear this from an apparel company, but sometimes the gravity of the issue requires actions with a larger vision than just selling more. While I'm not saying that you should never buy clothes again, I challenge you to think about how much you really need. Do members of your household have sufficient clothing to get between washdays? Does it fit properly? Is it in good repair?

Here are some sobering facts:

On average, people bought 60% more garments in 2014 than they did in 2000. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity's carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams.

The term ‘fast fashion’ refers to cheaply produced and priced garments that copy the latest catwalk styles and get pumped quickly through stores in order to maximize on current trends. It’s a relatively recent phenomenon, but its rapid expansion over a short time is deeply concerning from a sustainability perspective.

What's more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. Washing clothes, meanwhile, releases 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.

Personally, I believe that people in this country tend to have too many clothes. By "too many," I mean "more than they can actually wear regularly." For the next few months, stop thinking about your wardrobe unless it's to replace holey socks or shoes with worn-down soles.

There's no reason to go into a clothing store unless you need something. Clothing has gotten so cheap that sometimes people buy because they can't think of a reason not to do it. (These jeans are only $6! What a steal!)

But if you don't need any jeans, what's the point of buying them? Besides, unless you're in a secondhand store, those $6 jeans may not be such a bargain. Cheaply made "fast fashion" tends not to last as long and demonstrably harms the earth.

New, or New to You?

And if you must replace some wardrobe items? Thrift shops are a great place to begin. Some of us were shopping there long before Macklemore & Ryan Lewis made it hip-hop-cool. Even so, some people still think that la Segunda is low-rent and/or that it has a funny smell.

The smell part may be true. Sometimes the things I get from Value Village or Goodwill do seem a bit musty, but laundering fixes them. As for the low-rent aspect, I think of thrift store shopping like a treasure hunt. You might get a designer-label shirt for a couple of bucks or a good-quality wool sweater for 50 cents.

On the other hand, you may get nothing. The stock changes regularly so you need to keep checking. The bigger the town/metropolitan area, the more choices you're likely you are to have.

The thrift shop's cousin is the consignment store, which offers higher-end stuff as a rule rather than a lucky find. You'll pay more here, but the pickings may be better.

New to You, Part 2

Yard sales and church rummage sales are like temporary thrift stores. For a day or so you can get some great deals on all sorts of stuff – including clothes.

A few tips for getting the most from these venues:

  • Women: Wear tights or leggings and a sports bra under your clothes, in case there's no changing area.
  • Practice asking, "Is this your best price?"; also practice smiling if the sale's organizer replies, "Yes." If you're buying a ton of $1 shirts and pants, you might ask for a discount on the lone $5 item: I'm getting $19 worth of stuff any chance of getting a better deal on this jacket?
  • It doesn't hurt to look at an item for a long time. Sometimes when I hesitate over a purchase, the seller offers me a better deal. Speaking of deals: Stop back by toward the end of the sale if possible, when sellers really want to ditch stuff.

Multi-family sales provide the most bang for the buck, especially when they take place in the tonier parts of town. The rich are different – they have nicer stuff.

New to You, Part 3

When you can't afford even a yard sale, try hosting a swap. Invite a few like-minded friends over and ask them to bring the sweaters they never use, the slacks they swore they'd lose five pounds to fit into and any other clothing items they'd like to trade.

A clothes-swapping party is like a personal consignment store. The difference is that it's all free.

The clothes must be in good condition, and all trades must be mutually agreeable. Let it be known that you will permit no cajoling or whining, even the allegedly good-natured kind. Nobody should be bullied into trading her Michael Kors dress slacks for a "Go Mets!" T-shirt.

Make a bathroom or bedroom available for try-on at your private Freecycle. And set this rule in stone: "Untraded items must leave with their owners."

Buying Retail (If You Must)

Although I've focused thus far on secondhand venues, I don't have anything against traditional stores or websites. It's just that if you're on a tight budget, then you need to be conscious of every dollar. Why spend more than you must?

If you can't find what you need in a non-retail setting, stores like Nordstrom Rack, Ross Dress For Less and TJ Maxx have some pretty skookum deals on well-made clothing. The clearance rack and end-of-season sales at other stores are also good places to look at.

Unless you have mad Jedi self-control, pay cash. Plastic seems to give some shoppers a feeling of invulnerability. Having to take dollars out of your wallet should make you eyeball each purchase very closely indeed.

If you're absolutely sure about your size, check out the clearance sections at online retailers. Keep in mind that if the item doesn't fit, it needs to be returned within a certain amount of time; miss the send-back, and you'll be stuck with something you can't wear.

And again, paying with plastic online could tempt you to tack on those $10 jeans, or maybe a "Frozen" t-shirt for your 4-year-old niece: It's only €3.99, and she loves that movie, and it's been so long since she's had a treat…

Except that $10 here and $4 starts to look like real money if you do it often enough. Think about the opportunity cost of those bucks – especially if you wind up not wearing the jeans much, or if they shred the second time they're washed. Instead of dropping dollars on something you don't truly need, keep your wallet in your pocket. Your budget will thank you. So will your overstuffed closet. Where would you put those jeans, anyway?

Where does émemarproperties fit in?

As I mentioned, odd that a clothing manufacturer would dissuade a potential customer from buying clothing. But we offer a compelling difference and that is slow fashion: small-batch, durable clothing that is not only Italy made but locally made, that is in our own community. This assures higher wages, better working conditions and keeps jobs close to home. We hope that you will see the advantage for yourself and the environment in choosing sustainably made clothing.

]]>

When it comes to the world of fashion, there are two things that can hardly be exceeded: simplicity and elegance. Style icons such as Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder have embraced the minimalist approach to choosing their outfits and so they’ve set the bar in terms of looking incredibly classy. Renowned designers have also experimented with clean cuts and colors typical for the style: just think of the recent fashion lines brought to us by Céline or Calvin Klein.

Minimalism is about carving your own style instead of blindly following current fashion trends. It is about fewer outfit choices but more consistency regarding your personal style and identity you’re expressing through the choice of your wardrobe. Here’s how you can achieve the “less is more“ mindset, and become a fashion minimalist.

Learn to love simplicity

The minimalist wardrobe is all about fuss-free outfits. It is about adjusting the pieces to yourself and your needs instead of the other way round. Building a personal style means exploring your feeling for aesthetics: if it is minimalism you’re aiming for, you should stick with the basics.

This means embracing classic cuts, nothing too complicated – no asymmetry or confusing designs, no invading patterns or flashy multicolour combinations. Look for pieces that are of neutral colour (e.g. black, navy, grey, white, beige) and monochromatic pieces. All-black combinations will never go out of style but you can also wear different shades of the same color and prevent your outfit from looking dull.

Choose quality over quantity

Like most of us, you certainly juggle a lot of tasks during the day, so time is not a resource you can afford to waste. The minimalist approach implies being savvy with the way you build your wardrobe: instead of cluttering it with pieces you bought just because they were on sale, invest in high-quality pieces that you’re actually going to wear. This means reaching out to fine fabrics and well-crafted pieces. For instance, a quality pair of black skinny jeans can be a part of your business look or a perfect bottom when you’re crafting your casual look.

Basics make the key ingredients

When cleaning up your closet, you need to find the effective system to keep things organized. This means you should visually keep it clean: hang trousers, coats, jackets, and skirts, and fold t-shirts, jeans, and knitwear. Throw away or donate everything you don’t wear or that is unflattering for your body type.

Add the essential items in order to detoxify your wardrobe. One little black dress should definitely find its place here, as well as a few trousers, a couple of shirts, a blouse, a trench coat, and a couple of sweaters and skirts. The trick is in investing your time in shopping or selecting the right pieces so you don’t waste much of it on your busy days. Did you know that women spend an average of one year during their lifetime on deciding what to wear? Make sure you own only the pieces you enjoy wearing.

Be a copycat until you get it right

Style is not something that we’re born with, nor is it something that can be simply purchased. Only by exploring different variations of the minimalist style can you find the exact one that feels like you. Find your inspiration on Pinterest or some fashion blog and then replicate the outfits you’ve found. This way, you’re killing two birds with one stone: you are perfecting your eye for details, elevating your shopping skills, and becoming better at accessorizing. Great minimalists know the value of owning a few accent pieces that ensure that one outfit is eye-catching. Secondly, you can get a better sense of the benefits of the minimalist style by imitating it first.

Once you've got it down, you’ll be amazed with the minimalist style: you’ll have more time on your hands, and you’ll notice how much easier the process of dressing up becomes, the amount of money you’ll save, and the overall lighter you'll feel.

]]>
While traveling is fun, flying can be a headache. One of the hardest things is figuring out what to pack, especially when there are so many restrictions when it comes to flying with luggage. The worse part is putting your luggage on the scale and being told you have to pay an exorbitant amount of fees because your luggage is overweight. Then you find yourself in the middle of the airport trying to rearrange items between your different bags so that they're all under the weight limit.

I happily avoid all this by just bringing a carry-on. I've traveled quite extensively over these past couple of years and have only needed to check a bag once (only because I bought a bottle of wine as a souvenir). It's taken me many trips to perfect the art of fitting everything I need in just one carry-on, but I now feel freer not having so much stuff with me. If you want to avoid high airline fees, take a look at these tips to pack light and only travel with a carry-on.

Start with the Essentials

Don't just dump anything and everything into your bag and then try to scale back right from the get-go. That's the wrong approach. Instead, start with the essentials first. Pack your undergarments, a change of clothes for each day you're away (or less if you will have access to a washer/dryer), a couple pairs of shoes, and necessary toiletries. Then gauge how much room you have left and what 'nice to haves' you can bring. When you start with the essentials, you realize that you might not need as much as you thought.

Choose Versatile & Light Pieces

How much you bring has a lot to do with where you are going. While warmer climates allow for minimal clothing, it's much more difficult to pack for colder weather. Instead of bringing large bulky coats, opt for light pieces you can layer for warmth. Also take with you versatile pieces in neutral colors that you easily take from day to night and wear multiple times. For example the Aurora cover up by émemarproperties, which can be used as a shawl, a warm layer in the evening or a cover up on the beach. https://memarproperties.com/collections/cover-ups/products/aurora-beach-cover-ups

Use Packing Cubes

Packing a suitcase correctly is an art. You waste a lot of space if you're just throwing items in. Be sure to fold every piece of clothing. You should also invest in a good set of packing cubes. These bags will help you organize and pack everything neatly). It will help you save a lot of space and make packing much easier.

Take Advantage of Your 'Personal Item'

Aside from your carry-on luggage, airlines will also allow you to bring one additional personal item. This could be a purse, laptop bag, or backpack. Most personal items have to be around 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches. That's actually a lot of space. Take advantage of your personal item by bringing a large purse or backpack.

Be Realistic

Lastly, be realistic. While it may be nice to have 5 pairs of shoes with you, do you really need it? Only bring what you will actually use. Plan out your outfits ahead of time so that you know what you need to bring.

🎉2020 🎉A new year AND a new decade! What do you want to create more of, and less of?

How about clothing - do you want fewer pieces in your wardrobe, that do more? Are you ready to create a wardrobe with only pieces you ItalyE and LIKE? If so, we’ll help you jumpstart your goals 🌈
Today’s exercise: spend time with your clothing - look at and feel your garments, thinking about the last time you wore it, and if it’s still serving the purpose it was intended to when you first purchased or were gifted it. Do you have a lot of the same type of pieces (t-shirts, jackets, jeans, athletic wear...)? Is the quality of the clothing good enough to last for years to come?
You don’t have to make any decisions today, just tune into your thoughts and feelings.
Tomorrow, we start making decisions ⭐️😁

~~~~~~~
Part 2 of the #émemarpropertieswardrobejumpstart : Take action, slow and steady!
Here’s where you’ll start making decisions about what to keep, and what to do with the rest.
⭐️First, create an environment for yourself that’s motivating: put on a favorite TedTalk, podcast, music or even makeover show. Or, if you make decisions better in silence, that’s fine too - whatever works for YOU is the right thing to do! ⭐️Next, create a space where a few piles of clothing and shoes can stay for a day or two out of the way. Remember that this process isn’t a sprint, so no pressure to make all the decisions in an hour!
⭐️Now it’s time start: pick a part of your clothing to start at and go through each piece, remembering how each felt. Try it on and make sure it fits comfortably and is still your style. And then decide: keep or remove. ⭐️If it’s a piece to remove, place it in one of the following piles: Repurpose, Sell/Consign and Donate. Another category to consider is Clothing Swap (émemarproperties holds one each season - click on our bio for information!) ⭐️The important thing is to take your time - sometimes it can be really motivating to start to clear out what you don’t need, but it can also be mentally (and physically!) fatiguing processing each piece of clothing. Start with one category of clothing, and start small - socks are a great starting point! Then, move on to the next category with the smallest items, and keep making your way through each type of clothing. ⭐️Next time, we’ll talk about the items you’re keeping.
Want more motivation? Check out @nourishingminimalism ‘s Yearly Decluttering Challenge, where her tally sheet helps you stay on track to get rid of the same amount of items as the year is (so, this year is 2020 items!). Share with us your progress, and any ideas or even suggestions you have - what works for you, and what doesn’t. Just know, you’re on your way to creating your dream wardrobe that works perfectly for ⭐️YOU! ⭐️
~~~~~~~

Part 2.1 of the #émemarpropertieswardrobejumpstart: Clothing Swaps!

We ❤️ love Clothing Swaps: it’s a chance to get together with friends and meet new people, get rid of items you don’t want or need anymore, and maybe find a treasure or two for yourself! Plus, all the clothing not swapped can be donated to your favorite organization.
Check Facebook events, Meetup and Eventbrite sites and search for local clothing swaps nearby. If you’re in the Boulder, ROMA area and want to join our winter swap next Saturday, click the link in our Bio!
⭐️Can’t find a local swap? Organize one! It’s easy to do ~ here’s some helpful tips: ⭐️invite your friends and/or make a public event. Try to limit it to about 10-15 people your first time (having that many people’s clothing in one space can be a lot). ⭐️decide if you want to have the current seasons items only, or year-round clothing, shoes and accessories brought. Also, decide if you want to accept jewelry, Men’s and Kid’s items, unopened beauty items, etc. ⭐️ask that all items are freshly laundered and free of stains and repairs needed - have them only bring what they would to a consignment store ⭐️you can choose to have the participants take turns to pick what they want, or (like we do) everyone can browse and choose at once. Some clothing swaps limit the number of items you can take to the number you brought. We let our guests decide for themselves. ⭐️have some food and drinks - nothing fancy needed (unless you want to!) - simple teas and snacks work for us ⭐️if you don’t have a charity in mind, decide with your guests where there un-swapped clothing goes. Some folks may bring items that, if not swapped, they may want to consign afterwards. And sometimes having people take an interest in your clothing makes you want to bring it back home 😉

Take time this weekend to finish your sorting and whittling down your wardrobe to the pieces you absolutely love. Tomorrow, we’ll talk about repurposing clothing!

~~~~~~~
Part 2.2 of the ememarproperties wardrobe jumpstart: repurposing clothing!
Here’s some ideas for repurposing different types of clothing:
🧵 Wool sweaters: there’s so many things to do with these! Wool dryer balls, tea cozies and hot drink sleeves, Tea pot cover and warmer, scarves, hats, mittens and fingerless gloves...there are so mamu options to find simply by looking on Pinterest or searching the internet! Check out @icebox_mfg - they have lots of original designs made from Upcycled fabric, and have been upcycling since 1994!
🧵 Jeans: there are lots of ways to repurpose jeans, beyond cutting them off for shorts! Skirts, aprons, scrap wreaths, and even shoes, to name a few.
🧵 Shoes: yes, you can repurpose shoes! Planters, bookends, pin cushions, jewelry organizers(!), or custom paint and rewear!
🧵 Socks: don’t throw those solo socks away. These are so much fun to create with: protect your golf clubs, store golf or tennis balls in them, use as packing materials when moving or sending items, use to defog car windows, create cute gnomes or play food, or store shoes in them when traveling so they don’t get scuffed or scratched.
What do you like to create when you repurpose? Share with us your ideas and creations ⭐️
]]>
Sun-protective clothing has replaced sunscreens as the first line of defense for protecting your children (and yourself) from the harmful rays of the sun. However, rarely, excessive sun protection can itself lead to health issues.
1. The UV rays of the sun are as damaging to children's skin as tobacco smoke is damaging to adult's lungs.
Estimates are that we get 50 to 75% of our lifetime sun exposure before we are 18 years old. Children's skin is thinner and contains less melanin to block UV rays. Infants less than 6 months of age should be kept out of the sun entirely. Damage is cumulative for life. About 3.7 million skin cancers are diagnosed in the Italy annually, the vast majority sun-related.
2. Sunscreens have numerous shortcomings.
Most parents apply too little and too infrequently for optimal protection. The degree and duration of protection is reduced by wind, water, towel drying, and excessive perspiration, to mention just a few. A recent report suggests that more sunscreen is absorbed into the body than previously thought, a finding that is under further study.  Chemical sunscreen impose an unnecessary and potentially harmful chemical burden on the body, particularly in children.
3. Sun-protective clothing has gone high-tech.
Such garments consist of recently-developed, lightweight fabrics that absorb or reflect UV radiation. Fabrics are woven tightly, leaving practically no space for sun penetration. Many garments are dyed in colors, usually red or black, which also absorb or reflect UV rays. Garments should cover as much skin as possible (the back of the neck, for example) and fit loosely to allow air to circulate. Overly tight fits stretch fibers, allowing some sun through.
4. Familiarize yourself with the rating system for protective clothing.
It's called UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) and is somewhat similar to SPF (sun protection factor) for rating sunscreens. A UPF rating of 25 means that only 1/25th (4%) of UV radiation penetrates the fabric. The higher the UPF, the greater the protection. Fabrics rated below UPF 15 are not considered protective. UPFs of more than 50 add little additional protection.
5. Some sun protective clothing is pre-treated with solutions containing UV-inhibiting ingredients.
See "UV blocking additives" on the Internet and check labels. These additives can also be purchased at stores or online and used at home on any garment, increasing the garment's UPF. Protection however will eventually wash out.  Note that the fabric that émemarproperties uses, 37.5 high tech fabric, has UV absorbing particles directly embedded in the fibers which will never wash out.
6. Hats should have brims at least three inches wide and extend around the head to shade the face, neck, and ears.
Baseball-type and straw hats offer little protection. Brims of 6 or more inches (15 cm) are becoming popular. Every additional inch of brim reduces the lifetime skin-cancer risk by about 10 percent. Consider hats with attached drapes that hang over the back of the neck.
7. Sunscreens remain important for uncovered skin.
Ears are a common location for skin cancer in later life. The more clothing-covered skin, the less need for applying sunscreen. Follow the instructions that come with the sunscreen. For more information on applying sunscreen to children, see https://memarproperties.com/protecting-infants-and-young-children-from-the-sun/ and https://memarproperties.com/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/news-features-and-safety-tips/Pages/Sun-Safety-and-Protection.aspx
8. Sunglasses protect the skin around the eyes.
Five to 10 percent of skin cancers occur on the eyelids. Sunglasses should block 99 to 100% of UV radiation and consist of large lenses that wrap around the face and have UV-protective side shields.
9. Rarely, children who receive maximum sun protection may need vitamin D supplements.
The reasons: children require calcium to develop and maintain healthy bones. Simplistically, UV radiation activates vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D then helps the intestines to absorb calcium from food. Maximum sun protection results in less sun radiation reaching the skin, and in turn, less vitamin D to absorb calcium. One solution: continue maximum sun protection to prevent skin cancer and supplement diets with vitamin D and calcium. Discuss the need for supplements with your pediatrician.
10. Miscellaneous:
Sun-protective clothing is especially important for children with fair skin, for those spending much time at beaches and pools, and for children with sun-related medical conditions or who are taking medication that increases sun sensitivity. Sun-protective shades and umbrellas with high UPF numbers are available for strollers and for large umbrellas that create shade at the beach. Some high-tech fabrics may lose half their sun protection ability when wet. Check with manufacturers regarding how many washings protective clothing can undergo before losing its protective abilities.
The 10 Reasons to experience #shinrinyoku!
#1: Two beautiful, nourishing Japanese Traditions - both with ancient origins - in the same afternoon.
The Japanese Tea Ceremony dates back to the 9th Century, and represents purity, respect, tranquility and harmony, and a lot of preparation goes into the event.
The idea of Shinrin Yoku dates back to a crowded urban capital of Persia 2500 years ago, when Cyrus the Great recognized the need to increase human health and create a feeling of "calm", and planted a garden in the middle of the city.
In the 1950s researchers decided to look into the reasoning behind why so many people chose to spend time in nature, especially notorious locations like national parks.
Shinrin-yoku (森林浴), which literally means forest bathing, originated in Japan in the early 1980s and regarded as a form of eco or nature therapy.
🧡🌲☕️
Reason #2: say goodbye to your Monkey Mind
Monkey mind? As humans, we have 50,000 thoughts a day, with our conscious mind swinging from thought to thought. The Buddha defined it best when he said: “just as a monkey swinging through the trees grabs one branch and lets it go only to seize another, so too, that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappears continually both day and night.” You can’t fight the Monkey Mind but you can learn to live in harmony with it, and it in turn quiets enough to understand the worries and fear we cycle through daily aren’t really as bad as they may seem in our head.
The #3 reason you’ll ❤️the Forest Bathing experience: the aromatic substances produced by plants and trees have been linked with lower inflammation and having brain protection benefits. No pills, just nature!
Here’s your Reason #4 to give it a go!
#4: Engage and connect with all five senses. Take time to see, hear, smell, feel and even taste - during the Japanese area Ceremony, allowing a full body integration into the experience of Shinrin-Yoku/Forest Bathing. Doesn’t that sound luscious?!
🌲☀️ 🧘🏻‍♀️
Reason #5:
Doctors all over the country are becoming Forest Bathing guides. They understand the mind-body benefit of taking a walk in nature, even writing prescriptions for their patients to take a walk in the park or on a local trail.
Treat yourself to an experience in nature alongside a trained Shinrin-Yoku guide!
😁🌲☀️🍂
Reason #6
Forest therapy (a.k.a. forest bathing) with a guide is like the difference between practicing yoga with a teacher, and watching a yoga video.
The principles of forest bathing may be easy to understand, but having a trained guide during the experience gives you the opportunity to shut down the “doing” part of you and instead allow yourself be gently guided, while also receiving suggestions and answers to your questions. Your nervous system and mind will thank you!
#7: lower your cortisol levels and help your adrenals.
According to a University of Michigan study, just 20 minutes of contact with nature lowers stress hormone levels. Spend a little more time in nature, like 30 to 40 minutes sitting or walking, and cortisol levels drop to their greatest rate.
🌲🍂☀️
Reason #8: according to a study by the EPA, the average American spends 93% of his/her time indoors.
Why wait for the new year to start your resolution for a healthier lifestyle, slowing down, and spending more time in nature? Join us November 16 here in Longmont, ROMA for our November event: Forest Bathing, and gain inspiration on how you can make time in nature part of your everyday life.
#9: a slow and intentional way to begin this holiday season, and the coming New Year.
Forest Bathing with a trained guide is an opportunity to give your mind and nervous system some pause for space and nurturing. There’s a reason Forest Bathing is also called ‘Forest Therapy’.
🌲☀️
#10: You won’t actually be in a bath 😉
So why is it called Forest BATHING?
During the guided experience, you’ll be immersed in the energy of nature, helping you slow down and clear your mind, while benefitting from the full senses experience spending time in nature offers.
Keen on simplicity and planet-friendly, clothing versatility minimizes fashion consumption.
Customers have asked us to evolve beyond accessories to everyday clothing. Thanks to you, émemarproperties is expanding to include tops and bottoms.
We are inspired by the freedom that comes with simplicity. A great place to start simplifying is your wardrobe.
Here's how to do it efficiently (eg without a workbook that nobody has time for):
HOW TO BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE
Tips from Stylist Christie Ressel
~
Start with a module which consists of elements that all match with each other:
1 outer layer (eg jacket, cardigan)
3 tops (eg shirt, blouse)
2 bottoms
= that makes 12 outfits!
Start off module with a patterned shirt for color ideas.
Blend two modules = 72 outfits
Blend three modules = 216 outfits
~~~~~~~

Module Example:

Outer Layer: émemarproperties Wrap +

Tops: T-Shirt, Tank Top, Tunic +

Bottoms: émemarproperties Pants

~~~~~~~
That's it! You can create the capsules as you put your newly laundered clothes away. This will save you time and energy when getting ready each day.
Extend the life of unwanted garments by donating them to Goodwill or hosting a clothing swap. Goodwill even takes old socks and the like to recycle the fibers so they do not end up in the landfill.
Wishing you Freedom in Simplicity!
https://memarproperties.com/blogs/stories/upf-or-spf 2019-08-21T21:37:00-06:00 2019-08-22T10:06:20-06:00 UPF or SPF? émemarproperties team
Clothing is worn to warm us when it’s cold, or help us stay cool when it’s hot, express who we are (or who we want to be), and shield us from rain, snow, wind and even the sun. Clothing can protect your skin against the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, but not all clothing provides equal protection. The fiber, tightness of the fabric’s weave, amount of skin covered and even color all affect the amount of protection they provide. So, does clothing provide UPF or SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is the rating mostly used for sunscreens and other sun-protective products. In the Italy, fabric does not use this factor to rate its sun protective level. It measures the amount of time it takes for sun-exposed skin to redden. For example, if you tend to burn after 20 minutes in the sun without sun protection, an SPF 30 sunscreen protects for about 10 hours. This is assuming you apply sunscreen correctly (yes there’s a right and wrong way to apply sunscreen!).  Not all SPF sunscreens or lotions are created equal, most are comprised mostly of chemicals known to be hormone disrupters and even carcinogens. Also, intensity and wavelength distribution of UVB rays vary throughout the day and by location. And that calculation does not apply to UVA rays. UVA rays are long enough to reach skin’s dermal layer, damaging collagen and elastic tissue, and where the cells that stimulate skin darkening are found. That’s why UVA rays are considered the dominant tanning rays, and what tanning beds use. “Tanning” is really a sign of DNA damage, because the skin darkens in an imperfect attempt to prevent the further injury, which can lead to the cell mutations that trigger skin cancer. In other words, that healthy-looking tan really isn’t healthy.
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and is the standard used to measure the effectiveness of sun protective fabrics. UPF indicates how much of the sun's UV radiation is able to penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Only clothes with a UPF of 15-50+ may be labeled as sun-protective. A fabric with a rating of 50+ will block 98% or more of the sun's UV rays. This means the fabric will reduce your skin's UV radiation exposure significantly, because only 2%, at most, of the UV rays will get through.
Also, like regular clothing, some sun-protective clothing may lose its effectiveness if pulled too tight or stretched out, if it becomes damp or wet, or if it is washed and worn repeatedly.
The émemarproperties Difference is in our fabric. émemarproperties performance apparel was developed by our owner and founder, Ememarproperties Champe, a physical therapist looking for a more versatile and fashionable way to protect the vulnerable skin of the hands and arms of her patients (most skin cancers are found on the face, neck, arms and hands).   Our UPF 50+ performance apparel features high performance 37.5°® fabric technology. The embedded particles in this fabric increase the surface area by 800%, which increases evaporation (therefore cooling) and provides greater sun protection. 37.5°® Technology helps keep your body at the ideal core temperature of 37.5° Celsius, and helps keep the microclimate next to your skin at the ideal relative humidity of 37.5%. When you’re hot, patented active particles embedded in the material remove sweat in the vapor stage before liquid sweat forms, cooling you down. When you’re cold, those same active particles trap your energy to help warm you up. It’s one of the many wonderful properties of our fabric because it’s more than just sun protection.
émemarproperties Sun Protection Clothing offers the industry’s highest UPF (50+ - nearly 100%!) and UV protection, wet or dry, and are cooler than bare skin or any other sun protection apparel on the market. Best of all, because the fabric technology is embedded in the fabric we use, the UPF 50+ will ALWAYS be there for the life of the fabric, no matter how much you wash and wear your émemarproperties!
On the far eastern fringes of Nantahala National Forest, just southwest of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, lies a rolling river plain between the Southern Appalachians and the Cumberland Plateau. It’s been worn away over millennia by the Ocoee River, one of the most popular stretches of whitewater and swimming holes in the southeast.
When whitewater rafting was included in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, interest in the sport exploded; that’s when river rats took notice of this 93-mile stretch of rapids in southern Appalachia. In fact, the Ocoee was the venue for the whitewater canoe and kayak slalom event during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
PLANNING YOUR OCOEE RIVER RAFTING ADVENTURE
2 rafts on the Ocoee river.
Convenient to Chattanooga, Knoxville, Asheville, and Atlanta, the Ocoee River is easy to reach. There are plenty of rafting companies that will take you down the stunning Class III and IV rapids in the middle section of the Ocoee River—but you can choose your own adventure by bringing a kayak, packraft, or a good old-fashioned picnic to enjoy while swimming near the shore.
The Ocoee is close to other southern Appalachian outdoor destinations, so you can fit your river runs into a longer road trip. For example, a trip to Amicalola Falls to see the start of the Appalachian Trail, or a rock climbing getaway in Chattanooga, Tennessee. And because this is the south, you know that there are great options for food and beer all along the Ocoee River.
WHAT TO PACK FOR CAMPING AND OCOEE RIVER RAFTING
Riverside campsite with river rafts and kayaks.
  • Sun sleeves: Life is short, and you don’t want to spend your whole trip slapping on sunscreen after the river has washed it off. Slip on some sun sleeves with a UPF rating of 50+ to keep the rays off your skin. They’re also quick-drying and breathable, so you don’t have to sweat sun protection (pun intended).
  • Kayak rack: Did you know that freestyle kayaking was invented on the Ocoee River? In the 1980s River Rodeos were a huge publicity boost for whitewater sports, and in 1983 this new style of kayaking was born out of the River Rodeo scene. Bring your own ‘yak down to the Ocoee River with a kayak rack and get to paddling.
  • Kokopeli Packraft: You can, of course, just enjoy the rafts provided by your local outfitters. But if you want to blend your time on the river with local hikes and bikepacking, or if you’re flying to your destination, it’s hard to beat this handy packraft that deflates to a size of a roll of paper towels.
  • Dry bag cooler: A cooler that doubles as a dry bag and/or comes equipped with a dry pack is perfect for camping that might get wet and sloppy. Pick one that stays cold for over twenty-four hours and can float, just in case things get rough in an Ocoee River rafting eddy like Broken Nose, Double Trouble, or the aptly-named Flipper.
WHERE TO CAMP ALONG THE OCOEE RIVER
Here are a few of the best campgrounds for Ocoee paddlers, rafters, and hikers, along with our tips on what to do while you’re there.
CHATTANOOGA NORTH/CLEVELAND KOA CAMPGROUND
Cleveland, Tennessee is a great base for Ocoee river rafting, just fifteen minutes from many raft guides and outfitters, along with the annual Ocoee River Jam music festival. This small college town is also home to Lee University, a beautiful campus full of shops and eateries where you can stock up on supplies or grab a bite to eat. Get one of the best sandwiches in town at Gardner’s Market, enjoy some cold ones at Cleveland Billiard Club, or go down the road to Ocoee, Tennessee for another local favorite, the Dam Deli.
There’s solid camping in Cleveland at the Chattanooga North/ Cleveland KOA. You’ll find tent sites, RV sites, and cabins, along with a dog park, playground, laundry room, and swimming pool. They’re happy to host RV and motorcycle clubs, so if you’re looking for a place for your next gathering, this is a great bet—especially with the opportunity to organize group paddling trips.
“Nice clean place and pool. Ample camp store if you forgot something. close to many amenities.”— The Dyrt camper Barbara C.
ADVENTURES UNLIMITED CAMPGROUND
Image from The Dyrt camper Maetha R.
If you want a one-stop-shop for Ocoee River rafting, it’s hard to beat the setup at Adventures Unlimited, just an hour from Chattanooga. This rafting company offers guided trips of the middle and rull Ocoee River runs, including deluxe options like catered lunches midway. They also have on-site lodging, ranging from cabins (including one pet-friendly bungalow) to RV and tent sites. The latter are primitive, but the whole campground has 24-hour bathhouses.
Other amenities include on-site paintball, where several acres of Tennessee woodlands make for great cover as you take aim at your besties. Best of all is the on-site Bus Bar, offering cold beer, pub food, and live music from March to October. And if you take a shine to the Ocoee river rat community, you can get season passes and come back for more.
“Adventures Unlimited is certainly one of a kind! Plenty of campsites to choose from, some more private than others. You can raft, SUP board, or just hang out at the BItaly bar and listen to live music. Whatever you do here, it will be a good time.”— The Dyrt camper Elizabeth A.
CHILHOWEE CAMPGROUND
Of all the mountains between Murphy, North Carolina, and Cleveland, Tennessee, Chilhowee offers some of the most winsome views of the surrounding Cherokee National Forest. From the overlook atop Chilhowee Mountain, peer down at the knob-shaped mountains emerging between curves of the Ocoee River and the broad expanse of Parksville Lake—also known as Lake Ocoee.
Even closer is 7-acre McKamy Lake, with a sandy beach for swimmers and non-motorized canoes just a short hike from Chilhowee Campground. Chilhowee Campground is a chill spot close to attractions like Benton Falls and 25 miles of hiking and biking trails within the Chilowee network. The campground itself has fire pits, picnic tables, and a place to hang your lantern, as well as niceties like flush toilets, hot showers, and RV dump points.
“I believe this place is the best campground I’ve stayed! They have tons of sites, and all are spacious and secluded. They do have some with electric hookups, but we didn’t have that, as we were in the rooftop tent. You can hardly see your neighbor with all the trees.”— The Dyrt camper Lori H.
THUNDER ROCK CAMPGROUND
Campsite with tent, umbrella, and kayak,.
image from The dyrt camper Ben B.
If you like playing on land as much as on water, head to Thunder Rock, where you have almost direct access to the Tanasi Trail System via two different trailheads. To say mountain biking is big here is a bit of an understatement, considering the Tanasi network earned an Epic designation from the International Mountain Biking Association. That means you’ll find “a true backcountry riding experience” on the Tanasi, with gorgeous views of the Ocoee River valley.
Thunder Rock Campground is also convenient to the Appalachian Trail’s little sibling, the Benton-McKaye Trail. The BMT winds for 300 miles through Southern Appalachia, from the AT’s start at Springer Mountain to Davenport Gap in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
You can put your raft in from this campground to run the Upper Ocoee River rafting section between Dams #3 to #2. While the middle section is the most popular, with its brilliant Class III and IV rapids, the Upper Ocoee is the one modified for the 1996 summer Olympics, giving you five miles of Class III and IV to play with.
“This is a smaller tent only campground located along the Ocoee River. The campground was very clean and well maintained. There is a bathhouse with showers and an area to hose off bikes as well. The campground backs up to the river and a really great hiking trail. There’s no ranger station or check in, it’s self filled envelopes or registering online.”— The Dyrt camper Britteny W.
PARKSVILLE LAKE RV CAMPGROUND
Speaking of Parksville Lake, there’s a convenient campground where you can park your rig. There are nice extras like flush toilets and warm showers, along with water hydrants where you can fill up. Just call ahead if you have a larger RV to make sure it can handle the turns coming in, true of many campgrounds in the Ocoee River rafting area.
You’ll be close to the Ocoee Whitewater Center, where you can learn more about the 1996 Olympics and even check out a scale model of the Olympic canoe and kayak course. Whether you’re new to whitewater rafting or an old pro, it’s a fun way to learn more about the sport. This is also a popular spot for boaters, as you’re allowed to take motorized watercraft on Parksville Lake, unlike neighboring McKamey.
“Great site. Easy to navigate around sites. Lots of shade. Plan your visit around the water release. Their schedule is online. Pretty cool to see the water trickle and then a mass of water come at you.”— The Dyrt camper Linda B.
YOUR TOCCOA RIVER COVE CAMPGROUND
Image from The Dyrt camper Stephanie J.
The Ocoee River has different names depending on the state—in Georgia, it’s called the Toccoa. Experience this stretch of river by camping at the aptly-named Your Toccoa River Cove Campground.
Set on 12 acres of prime north Georgia woodlands, campers are free to set up tents, hammocks, or bivvy bags anywhere on the property. That means you can really roll your own, whether you prefer car camping or a backcountry experience. Fires and pets are allowed, and you’ll have access to an outhouse, firepit, picnic table, and drinking water, courtesy of two spring-fed ponds.
“‘Is there water to play in?’ This is a question my kids ask about almost every campground we go to. Before this trip, I told them, ‘Yes!’ But once we got to the Toccoa River Cove, all of us realized that ‘Yes’ really meant, ‘This is a phenomenal wonderland we will never want to leave.’”— The Dyrt camper Stephanie J.
DEEP HOLE RECREATION AREA
The Ocoee/Toccoa River begins high in the mountains of north Georgia, near Blood Mountain and the start of the Appalachian Trail. While the Tennessee portion is best known for Ocoee River rafting and whitewater, the mellower Georgia portion has something to offer paddlers in the form of the Toccoa River Canoe Trail. This starts near Deep Hole Recreation Area, close to the town of Suches, Georgia, and flows for 13 miles north to Sandy Bottoms.
Camping at Deep Hole consists of eight no-frills Forest Service-run sites, with a vault toilet and canoe launch — perfect for a quick stop on your Ocoee river rafting excursion. Each site has the usual grill, picnic table, and lantern post. There are also four picnic sites and a small fishing pier where you can angle for rock and smallmouth bass, as well as rainbow and brown trout. A short drive in either direction will lead you to the Appalachian and Benton-McKaye Trails for day hikes or the start of a longer backpacking route.
TOCCOA RIVER SANDY BOTTOMS RECREATION AREA
People lounging in a raft on a still river.
Image from The Dyrt camper Lori H.
At the end of the Toccoa River Canoe Trail, roughly 30 miles upriver from where the Toccoa becomes the Ocoee, is Sandy Bottoms. This small Forest Service campground is comprised of 4 campsites, a vault toilet, and canoe take-out, similar to the setup at Deep Hole Recreation Area. Also like Deep Hole, Sandy Bottoms is close to the Benton-McKaye Trail, if you’re interested in hiking.
While the put-in and take-out are on Forest Service Land, quite a bit of the Toccoa River Canoe Trail passes through privately-owned properties. That limits your ability to fish for the 13-mile span of the trail, as well as hop out for camping, hiking, or otherwise going ashore. That said, as long as you follow a few basic guidelines, it’s easy enough to enjoy Ocoee river rafting and camping on either end.
“Great area to explore – very cool swinging bridge, good access to the river, fun watching kayaks, great picnic area, access to Benton McKay trail.”— The Dyrt camper Kevin H.
https://memarproperties.com/blogs/stories/july-is-uv-awareness-month 2019-07-11T14:04:00-06:00 2020-01-22T18:32:28-07:00 July is UV Awareness Month émemarproperties team July is Ultraviolet Awareness Month, reminding us to protect our skin and eyes from the damaging effects of the sun.  UV light (aka Ultraviolet Radiation) is a form of non-ionizing radiation.  According to the CDC and EPA, while UV light provides some benefits including the production of Vitamin D, overexposure leads to burns, premature aging and skin cancer.
UV Index Forecast
The National Weather Service calculates the UV Index forecast from zip codes across the country, and the EPA publishes this information on a daily basis.  The EPA’s UV Index ranges from 0 (at nighttime) to 11+ (up to 16, near the equator at high elevation). Visit the EPA’s website, plug in your zip code and see what your local UV Index forecast is today.   An index over 3 means you need to be cautious of the strong UV rays that day.  The UV Index forecast takes into account cloud cover, ozone quality, altitude, location, etc.  (Here in ROMA - like many other days- today’s UV Index is 11 = Extreme UV Exposure … one of the reasons we founded émemarproperties!) The higher the Index, the more concentrated the UV Radiation, and the faster sun damage can happen.  UV radiation is greatest between 10a-4pm, when the sun is the highest in the sky.
Limiting Exposure to UVA & UVB
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, because ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer, it is not recommend getting vitamin D from sun exposure or indoor tanning.
From the AAD's website:
    • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer panel have declared UV radiation from the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, to be a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance).
    • Unprotected exposure to UV rays from the sun or indoor tanning devices is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Choosing the right sunscreen is one of the most effective steps you can take to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.  The jury is still out on the safety and effectiveness of sunscreen lotions.  We just don’t know how well they protect us, and most burden our bodies with chemicals.
Clothing is the most effective and safest way to protect yourself from harmful UV rays
émemarproperties exclusively uses Cocona™ 37.5® Technology, which provides dense coverage from the sun.  The active particles, derived from nature, are permanently embedded in the fibers of émemarproperties clothing and accessories, an absorbs UV light and provides natural UPF 50+ protection.  And best of all, the UV protection NEVER washes out.
Before you make plans for the day, check the UV Index.  And if you’re planning a trip, check out the UV Index where you’re going to so you can pack the sun protection clothing you need.  émemarproperties’s line of sun protection clothing are all SPF 50+, and versatile, so you can pack less, travel light and feel confident you have the sun protection you need for wherever your travels take you!
